History

Sanchez Elementary School, located in the south area of Houston, was established in 1985 and proudly carries the name of George I. Sanchez, a pioneering educator, scholar, and civil rights advocate whose work helped shape the future of education in Texas and across the nation.
Born in New Mexico in 1906, Dr. George I. Sanchez dedicated his life to advancing equity and access in public education, particularly for Mexican America. As a professor, researcher, and activist, he challenged discriminatory practices in schools and fought for the rights of all children to receive a fair and high-quality education.
Dr. Sanchez is often referred to as the "father of the Chicano intellectual movement" and was one of the first Mexican Americans to earn a doctorate in philosophy from the University of California, Berkeley. His work with the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) and other organizations helped lay the groundwork for future reforms in bilingual education, school funding, and civil rights.
Our school’s name serves as a daily reminder of his legacy—a call to champion educational excellence, equity, and opportunity for every student. At Sanchez Elementary, we strive to honor Dr. Sanchez’s vision by empowering our students to achieve at high levels and become leaders in a diverse, global society.
